Hong Kong City Hall, Central | The 55th Hong Kong French Film Festival Makes a Strong Comeback; Cannes Directors' Fortnight Makes its Hong Kong Debut
Description
The French Cultural Society of Hong Kong presents the 55th Hong Kong French Film Festival (HKFFF), which will return from November 11 to December 9, 2026. As Hong Kong's oldest film festival, this year's program boasts an unprecedented lineup, bringing together contemporary new works and classic films. Over 50 films will be presented at eight venues across Hong Kong, showcasing the vitality, profound heritage, and diverse innovation of French cinema.
The 55th Hong Kong French Film Festival will open on November 11 at the Hong Kong City Hall with the opening film being Antonin Baudry's epic biographical dichotomy, *The Wars of De Gaulle*. This year also marks the debut of the highly anticipated Cannes Directors' Fortnight Extended, with Artistic Director Julien Rejl attending related events in Hong Kong to share exclusive film insights with the public. Festival tickets will go on sale from October 20 at URBTIX and Broadway Cinemas.
A brand-new educational outreach program, "Let's Go to the Movies!", is launched simultaneously, bringing French films and culture to schools throughout Hong Kong. The festival is also honored to have the legendary director and screenwriter Jean-Pierre Jeunet (director of *Amélie*) visit Hong Kong. During his visit, he will conduct masterclasses, give media interviews, and present a preview of his latest film, *Violette*, which is expected to be officially released in France in December 2026.
Opening Night: *La Bataille de Gaulle*
The 55th Hong Kong French Film Festival will open on November 11th at the Hong Kong City Hall. The opening film is Antonin Baudry's epic biographical diary, *La Bataille de Gaulle*, starring Simon Abkarian as the legendary French historical figure Charles de Gaulle. The second part of the biography will follow on November 13th, continuing this legendary story at the Hong Kong City Hall.
The story takes place in June 1940, when the situation in France deteriorated rapidly, leading to the signing of an armistice. Facing imminent defeat, de Gaulle refused to yield and made a desperate gamble, flying alone to London. He firmly believed that the French struggle was not over, and despite lacking military and political support, he was determined to uphold the ideals of Free France. As the situation developed, resistance fighters, students, and soldiers across England, France, and Africa joined forces to reverse what seemed like a predetermined outcome.
